It seems the first question that needs to be answered when considering your first purchase of motorcycle clothing is – ‘Should I buy leather or textile gear?’
You need to ask yourself a series of questions to help you establish the answer.
-
The big one – Do you NEED your clothing to be waterproof?
-
Will you be riding throughout the seasons, so you need to consider temperature change?
-
Are you looking for something sporty for your GSXR or something more subtle for your Pan European?
These are all very valid questions that, when answered will help you establish which kit to choose.
If you are pretty sure that you’re not going storm chasing on your new machine, then do you really need to consider the intricacies of drop liners, water release valves and sealed zips? If you’re off to the seaside on hot Sunday afternoons and riding mid-week after work, then seriously, step away from the waterproofs and treat yourself to something that will keep you cool during the warmer months. Leather is highly abrasive and becomes beautifully supple once ‘bedded in’. For Summer riding, leather can’t be beaten.
There is nothing worse than feeling overheated and sticky whilst trying to enjoy your motorcycle. Leather will generally keep you cooler than textile, especially when you are actually riding. A well chosen base layer, such as Pro Skins undergarments, will help your leathers glide on and off and prevent chaffing in any areas – a priceless decision.
Textile has to be a strong consideration for the motorcyclist that won’t shy away from a bit of rain on the roads. Generally, if you’re going to commute on your motorbike EVER, then go for something waterproof. Nobody wants to arrive at work wet – fact.
Textile jackets and trousers often have a removable liner that can be taken out and put back in within a matter of minutes, so even if the sun is shining you can be cool enough to enjoy your bike, yet have the reassurance of thermal liners should the weather take a turn for the worse.
Having worked out what type of motorcycle clothing you need, now all you need to do is decide which individual items to choose!
Colours range from black to bright orange, and styles vary dramatically so the best advice really is – take your time, ask plenty of questions, read reviews. Just because it’s the most expensive, doesn’t necessarilly make it the best, nor is the cheapest the worst.
Motorbike clothing these days generally lasts a good few years if treated with respect, so whatever you choose, you’ll be wearing for a while – so don’t make a rushed decision!
