MCE Insurance BSB 2015: Shane Shakey Byrne knocked off the top of the podium

The second round of the MCE Insurance BSB Championship saw an exciting showdown at Brands Hatch this weekend

Shane Shakey Byrne’s still standing at the top of the league table after he rode his way to two wins at Donington Park a few weeks ago but his winning streak wasn’t continued into the second championship meet-up at Brands Hatch this weekend.

Shakey still put in a strong performance and secured a superb second place for both races. He fought hard to keep James Ellison off the top spot and before his second race seemed confident and excited, “I think we will be in a right little ding dong at the front, which will be great fun.”

The race was closely contended by four riders out on the track as Byrne, Ryuichi Kiyonari and Josh Brookes all fought to break past the leading Ellison. Kiyonari expressed his enthusiasm for a win after crashing out early in the second race last weekend and you could feel it in his riding. He was cruising along in second place right up until lap five where a sour move on Paddocks Hill Bend let Shakey squeeze past him. His run remained consistent for another five rounds of the track which suggested third place was rightfully his, until a small mistake saw him run wide where Brookes slipped past him.

A crash-out from Danny Johnson riding the Morello Racing Kawasaki meant the excitement was stalled as the safety car was brought on track to help him off. This could have undone Ellison’s hard work, providing the other team members with the perfect opportunity to get ahead. However, Ellison was not giving up without a fight and he steamed ahead at the line, sustaining the lead until he crossed at the final lap with a well-deserved win, closely followed by Byrne and Brookes.

Kiyonari placed in last out of the troop of riders leading the race, which meant a very respectable fourth overall. This success has scooped him up into the top six championship standings where he is now placed at number six with 28 points.

The third clash of the BSB bikers takes place on May Bank Holiday weekend at Oulton Park in Cheshire – here’s hoping for more excitement and a sunny few days!
