SHARP Helmet Testing – What’s It All About?

AGV S4 5 Star SHARP Rating

The Department of Transport SHARP (Safety Helmet Assessment and Ratings Programme) helmet testing series is definitely something to consider next time you buy a helmet.

The mass of legislation that surrounds the production of motorcycle safety helmets is largely hot air, a few basic rules to be adhered to. Currently, helmets in the UK must meet the UN ECE Regulation 22.05 or comply with British Standard 6658:1985 in order to be classed as safe for use.

However, the SHARP testing gives you the real nitty-gritty, the real low down on how you can expect your helmet to perform and protect in the event of a crash. Faced with much more demanding tests, the results are not quite as you would expect.

For instance, the mid-priced Caberg range takes home many 5 star ratings, which in comparison to Shoei’s XR1000 which only received 3 stars. AGV comes up trumps too, with several of it’s models featuring in the the 4/5 star range. It is certainly very interesting reading. Take a look for yourself.

The SHARP tests began gathering ratings over the last 12-18 months, and are still gathering data on existing helmets as well as new models. Flip front helmets were included in the last batch of testing, and there are plans to include open face helmets in the future.

Visit the SHARP site to read more about the testing procedures, and to see how your helmet scores.
