The managing director of the famous Silverstone race circuit has shown his committment to motorcycle racing in a press release yesterday.
Following on from last weekend’s MotoGP round at Donington Park, Richard Phillips expressed his enthusiasm for motorcycle racing to return to the Northamptonshire circuit, which is due to undergo extensive re-development in the coming months to cater for large events such as next year’s GP rounds.
Speaking to the Press Association Course, Mr. Phillips said
We had 10 years of motorcycle Grand Prix racing here until 1986, and we are investing in the next 20 years of bike racing…We have seen what bike fans want and want to get people as close to the action as possible. We are moving grandstands and fencing to allow that to happen… We also want a fast track, full of overtaking possibilities to provide some exciting racing.
When asked about hosting both Formula 1 and MotoGP at the venue, Mr. Richards seemed confident that they could fulfill the needs of both momentous events.
We look forward to hosting them both…They are the pinnacle of racing on two and four wheels and we deserve to be the place to see them.
The planned changes include a new paddock and pitlane, and an additional portion of track which is likely to make Silverstone among the fastest circuits in the MotoGP schedule. Amassing to an estimated £5m, these changes are set to make Silverstone a premier circuit for bike racing.
