If you’ve not heard of Reevu Helmets, you’ve been missing out.
Reevu Helmets might just save your life. Bikers know that there’s nothing more important than your helmet when it comes to protection, so most helmets can claim to make a difference between life and death in the event of an accident. But Reevu, a UK-based company, went a step further and decided to help you avoid accidents altogether.
To achieve this aim, Reevu borrowed a safety feature from the world of cars, and installed a rear view mirror inside the helmet. Here at Two Wheel Centre, we have recently started to stock Reevu helmets, and we’ve had the chance to learn everything there is to know about this amazing innovation in helmet technology. We’re here to share everything we know with you, and to answer some of your burning questions!
A rear view mirror? How does that work?
It all starts with a clear panel in the back of the helmet, which is made of polycarbonate, designed to protect you just as well as the rest of the helmet. This panel lets in light from behind you and bends it through the top of the helmet, in a similar way to a periscope, until it hits an adjustable mirror in the front of the helmet. This mirror sits at the top of your field of vision and reflects whatever is coming up behind you on the road.
Just like driving a car, you can glance up, see what’s happening behind you and react accordingly. It offers you a better look at what’s behind you than just using your bike’s mirrors, and may just make that small difference in your reaction time that keeps you from ending up face down on the tarmac.
Wouldn’t the rear view mirror be really distracting?
We won’t pretend that the mirror doesn’t take some getting used to – it does. You’ll want to ride around your local area for a couple of weeks (or however long it takes you to get used to the helmet) before attempting a full-scale adventure or a track day. If you’re going to be using a Reevu helmet as your everyday lid and the mirror gets to be a bit too much, don’t worry. The mirror is removable and you can try it out again whenever you’re ready.
On balance, though, we’d say that the safety advantage of being able to see what’s behind you far outweighs the teething troubles you might experience at the beginning. Like all new things, it may just take some getting used to before you start to see the benefits.
Are Reevu helmets just a techie gimmick and not a serious lid?
Absolutely not! Despite being a new innovation, a lot of thought and planning (20 years of research and development, to be exact) has gone into making Reevu helmets a competitive helmet range with all the protection you’d expect of any decent lid. All of the helmets pass ECE 22.05 standards and they won’t let you down in an accident, being built of a high-quality and lightweight tri-composite carbon fibre weave. A dual-density EPS liner underneath offers extra protection where you need it most. A Reevu helmet arguably protects your head better than many other helmets, with the optical channel across the top creating an extra crumple zone on impact.
What else do Reevu helmets have to offer?
For those of you who like a good-looking helmet, Reevu’s unique Italian design should appeal, and the graphic version of the helmet comes in three colours. The aerodynamic design and effective Venturi ventilation make these helmets a great alternative for the track, and with ACU gold approval you could be using it to see your competitors sneaking up on you, or to avoid a dodgy overtake.
These helmets also include a hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking interior which is fully removable and washable, so your helmet remains a nice place to put your head for as long as you wear it. With cheek pads interchangeable between all helmet sizes, you can ride in a great-fitting helmet and feel comfortable and protected. The anti-fog and anti-scratch clear visor is another thoughtful feature.
Though the range is a bit thin on the ground at the moment, the choice of flip front or full face helmets and a decent range of colours and paint finishes means that you should find a Reevu helmet that suits you.
Will I pay more for Reevu than I would for other brands?
Reevu were determined to make their incredible rear view system accessible to everyone. So, luckily for you, they don’t come at top of the range prices, with the most expensive graphic and flip-front lids coming in at only £249.00 when you buy from us online or purchase in store. For that price, it’s well worth seeing what Reevu helmets have to offer, and if you come into our showroom, our Parts and Accessories staff will be more than happy to help you try one on.
