This month’s Rider Focus takes a look at Steve Cottam. An avid moto-x rider, he rode his first bike when he was just 8 years old. Once he’d shaken his stabilisers off there was no holding him back, and by 14 he was whipping round the AMCA circuit winning trophies left, right and center.

At 15 years old he was upgraded to senior AMCA level, and at the age of just over 16 he was in the Experts. He continued to race in the Experts until 1992, when he took a break from AMCA (to work on his love life). This failed miserably, so he decided to return to his first love – motocrossing. Steve turned his hand to enduro Hare and Hounds events for a while, but still did not get the same thrills as he did from his moto-x.

In 2001, he re-joined the AMCA organisation through the local Warsop Moto-x Club. That led again from senior level straight into Expert level, where he has won many trophies in the years up to 2007. After this, he then took up Twinshock Motorcross at National level, winning many races and taking 4th overall in his first year’s championship. It was during this time that he raced at the Pontrilas World Twinshock Championship in the 125cc class and finished runner up to the World Superbike rider Chris ‘Stalker’ Walker.

Not bad for an old bloke!
