Buying a bike can be one of the greatest thrills in life that much is certain. Nevertheless, when the excitement of buying your new gear and experiencing your first ride has finally begun to die down, the reality kicks in. What is the best way to keep this beautiful and extremely sought after machine safe?
There is approximately 95,921 registered bikes in the UK, and with around 13,140 bikes stolen a year, bike theft is a massive problem in the UK.
And with so many disc locks, chains (big and small), tracking devices, alarms and now, new products such as the RoadLoK, it really is difficult to decide what is best. At the end of the day, it is down to what you feel you can leave on your bike and walk away; happy in the knowledge it will still be there when you return.
Let us start with bike chains. Maybe the most secure way of leaving your bike, chained to something that can physically not be moved – such as a lamppost. Get this chain around your bikes frame and at least the bike will be there when you return, albeit with no wheels if you’re unlucky. The downside, this thing is heavy! Where are you going to store this when riding? On your shoulders? Not a lot of bikes have a big enough compartments. At worst that is going to cause some damage to your body if you come off your bike, at best, serious back ache.
Now onto the disc locks. Disc locks are great for the fact that they are small and lightweight, making it easy to carry your security round with you everywhere you go. Yes a thief can of course still come along and pick your bike up and chuck it in the back of a lorry, but 70% of bike theft is roll away – how are we letting these guys get away with this!? However, there is one fatal flaw in the disc lock, and that is…you. You all know what I mean. And I’m sure you have all been guilty (or know someone who is guilty of this)…trying to ride away with your disc lock on. If you’re lucky, new mudguard and brake disc – hello £100 and upwards bill. Unlucky, well, hello new bike.
And what about tracking devices you say? Products such as the Datatool TrakKING motorcycle device are absolute genius. You fit this onto your bike and if any unwanted visitor decides to take your bike for a spin, an alarm is sent to a team who work 24/7 – oh, and closely with the police to top it off! Downside, do you really want to go out to play on your bike again, knowing someone has sat in your seat with the intention of stealing your pride and joy away from you? It’s like someone offering you your favourite crisp after they’ve licked it…
Alarms. Well they make a loud noise, but do you ever leave your house when an alarm goes off outside on the street? I thought not. If you as the bike owner is not around, well your neighbour might even help the thief ride away – we’ve all got those neighbours we wish didn’t live next door.
At the end of the day, any sort of security on your bike instantly deters a thief from trying anything on, and with chains too heavy and us being simply too forgetful when it comes to a disc lock, there was a gap in the market for something extraordinary…
Welcome, the RoadLoK. Yes it may not be as secure as fixing your bike to a wall with a prison chain, but it’s equally as close in our eyes! A stylish device permanently mounted to your front brake calliper, stops roll away theft, stops you causing unnecessary damage to your bike – and did we mention it looks great?
So there you have it, the options are endless, and at the end of the day there really is no definite answer to what is the best way to secure your bike. If you’re still unsure get in touch, we’ll help you as much as we can to make this choice. Assessing your individual needs and what ultimately will work best for you.
Nevertheless, whatever you decide, we stock it all. Working towards a safer future for these incredible monsters of machines.
