Gerbing: Understanding the most dominant name in heated clothing.

Gerbing Heated Clothing: The most dominant name in heated clothing.

It’s now reaching that time of year where it’s becoming more and more necessary to grab the winter wear if you’re going to continue riding throughout the coming months. Gerbing heated clothing are here with the answer to your winter riding prayers. With their clothing and gloves being supplied to Olympic athletes, the police and even the armed forces, it’s easy to see why Gerbing is the most popular choice when it comes to heated clothing.

Microwhat?

Microwire construction means that the item is able to be heated with wiring so fine that it cannot be felt when wearing the items. This ensures you have a comfortable ride when using Gerbing products. Microwire is constructed from bundles of stainless steel strands only 12 microns thick; to put that into perspective, that’s a quarter of the thickness of a human hair! Multiple strands of this Microwire are wrapped in Teflon and used to heat your Gerbing items. Since the Microwire is so thin, it takes far less time to heat than other materials; Gerbing’s Microwire heats in just a tenth of the time it would take to heat standard copper wiring. Thanks to its stainless steel construction, Microwire is significantly more durable than its copper counterparts.

On the bike or on the go!Gerbing T - 12 Heated Gloves

Gerbing heated clothing comes as two different voltage ranges; the 12 volt and 7 volt. The important difference between the two voltages is their potential for portable heating. A Gerbing 12V item such as the Gerbing T-12 gloves can be connected to your motorcycle battery. Connecting the gloves to your bike battery provides continuous heat to your hands. This is a great feature whether you are on a long distance ride or a daily commute. Batteries can be purchased for Gerbing 12V products but only if the product itself has a pocket for the battery to be stored in. These are pockets that are sealed by a zipper and contain a connection wire to the item. These batteries are purchased separately to your Gerbing 12V product. You can see the Gerbing T-12 glove here on our website.

Gerbing 7V products cannot be readily powered by a motorcycle battery; Gerbing 7V items are designed to be powered by the battery packs that they are provided with. This means that further purchases need to be made to ensure that the gloves can be linked to your bike. In order to link a Gerbing 7V item such as the new Gerbing XR7 gloves to a motorcycle battery you will need to purchase a separate 7V temperature controller and a battery harness which will convert the 12V into 7V. Gerbing recommend that you use the 12V clothing and accessories if you are on a bike; please check if you are ordering a Gerbing 7V product that the item is designed for motorcycle use if you intend to use it when out riding.

Feeling hot, hot, hot!

Gerbing heated clothing products allow the user to change the heat setting for their Gerbing items to suit their needs. This is done with the use of a controller which users will operate to change the heat for their items. A series of flashing lights indicate the heat setting which you are using varying from red for 100% to a flashing green which is 25%. Since Gerbing gloves are designed for subzero temperatures, it is recommended that you start off with the flashing green setting and turn up the heat as required. When using a battery pack, the more heat require for the gloves, the shorter the battery life. Don’t be put off by this; a flashing green setting (25%) will give the user three hours of blissful warmth.

Designed for bikers.Gerbing 12V Jacket Liner

Gerbing recommend the 12V range to motorcycle riders since there is the available option to connect to a power source for continuous heat. Gerbing have made it possible to link together their 12V range to save multiple connections onto your battery terminals. The Gerbing 12V jacket liner has not only a wire that is designed to feed directly into the lead for your battery but also one for the accessories too. This means that you can run your jacket and your accessories at the same time! This will require a different heat controller (dual controller) as a separate purchase but ultimately you will be able to run your Gerbing jacket and accessories through one lead to your battery. Gerbing also allow you to operate a third accessory such as the Gerbing trousers through your jacket liner. The is done with the use of a splitter cable. You can check out the Gerbing Heated Jacket Liner on our website.

Don’t just take our word for it…

We spoke to Judith, the Chief Instructor for the Two Wheel Training school and asked her for her thoughts and feelings on Gerbing Heated Clothing:

“Ah yes, the Great Outdoors, something I am very familiar with in the course of my work as a motorcycle instructor of some twenty plus years. But the great outdoors can become not so great as temperatures dive and the freezing weather hits us full blast.

For me, a normal working day can often mean 6 to 8 hours on a bike, and as temperatures drop I reach for my Gerbing Heated Waistcoat. I am embarrassed to say I have only owned the Gerbing heated clothing for the last three years. Prior to this I would routinely be colder than a very cold thing! My fingers were like ice (actually feeling like my fingers will snap like a carrot if clutch or front brake is used!) and vital organs starting to feel the effects of hypothermia. Freezing cold does not even begin to describe!

Since having the Gerbing Heated Waistcoat in my repertoire my working day, in winter, has become so much more comfortable. I cannot recommend Gerbing clothing highly enough. If you must ride your bike through the winter months, the Gerbing heated clothing range are not luxury items – more of a wise choice. Keeping warm and comfortable on a motorbike is a very important; if your core temperature drops so does your concentration and your ability to ride safely. Be aware though, just because you are nice and toasty in your Gerbing apparel, the roads may not be, so always ride according to the road, weather and traffic conditions.

Stay safe out there, and stay warm with the Gerbing heated clothing range, summer is just around the next bend.”
