The Thruxton Moto3 racing finished with a mixed result for our local Taz
Taz Taylor began in the HEL Performance Motostar Championship, Moto3 racing, back in April, his first ride for the RS Racing KTM team. His consistent, strong performance has secured him podium positions for every race he’s finished, left fans in awe of his hard work and the league with a strong leader. Taz held his own again this weekend with another first race win, where Shane (Taz’s father) joined him for a champagne celebration, and a second race fourth place.
The first race at Thruxton was unpredictable, with no clear winner from the start. Taz began in pole position and held it for the first lap, until he hit the slipstream where he dropped back to fourth (see the map above if you’d like to recreate your own mental image of the race).
Forwards and backwards, switching and swapping, the Moto3 racing continued with fierce competition, by lap number number nine Taz cleared the line back in fifth. The final lap was underway and Taz clawed his way past those four front runners, magnificently owning the race and winning 0.5 seconds ahead of the competition. Team Taz must have sore cheeks from holding their breath for that corker, and Taz too – “I really enjoyed the race it was a bit crazy but great fun.”
The second race was another scrappy, Moto3 racing situation, with no clear leader or podium grabber. Taz began in a solid second position and remained there throughout the first lap. Lap number two was less solid and position swapping with the four front runners commenced. Taz raced to the front and held the lead for lap three. Though as with race number one his fellow racers ensured no room for mistakes. So unfortunately that smidgen of performance away from perfection on the final chicane cost Taz the podium position, but he was close behind and finished in a respectable fourth place. Many long straights form the Thruxton track distract from the few tight, demanding chicanes which could, as Taz learned yesterday, make or break your race-result. Taz was honest in his reflection, “I knew the second race would be tough and once again a dog fight until the flag… I made a small mistake on the final lap and had to take fourth, I’m disappointed but these things happen and it is more solid points in the bag.”
This break from the podium limelight is never welcome, but it hasn’t shaken Taz’s number one position on the league table, with a super six points ahead of Deroue.
Taz never forgets his support and sponsors, his post Moto3 racing comments concluded with his usual appreciation “I’d like to thank the team again for all their hard work and also all my sponsors for helping me this year.”
Taz is resting his tyres for a few weeks, anticipating the tricky track at Cadwell Park for round eight on the 21st-23rd August.
Did you hear about Taz’s MotoGP wildcard entry?
If you didn’t, here are some more details. In a nutshell, Taz recently won the wildcard entry for the Moto3 racing class in August’s MotoGP at Silverstone, a rare opportunity and career-defining moment. If anyone would like to support Taz he’s trying to raise a bit of cash to help with the £3,500 entry fee, you could also buy a ticket and go along for the race too.
Thank you again to Johnny Wills for capturing the event and sharing photos for us all to see.
