MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo Wins At Home In Jerez

Jorge Lorenzo is back, and the battle of champions just got tougher!

Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo compare trophiesIt turns out that Marquez and Rossi aren’t the only contenders for the title of MotoGP champion this year. After all the drama of the opening races, we’ve completely underestimated the other Spanish champ, Jorge Lorenzo.

Rossi’s Yamaha teammate was racing in front of a home crowd, and it seems to have spurred him on as he secured pole position in qualifying and went on to win with an amazing five second gap. Though we might suspect that Lorenzo slipped some rocket fuel into his tank, it’s hard to begrudge him this win with all his home fans watching, including his Mum: “Today it’s mother’s day so it’s very special, because my mum saw the race and saw me winning and tomorrow I turn 28…now we have to enjoy these hours, this night and this victory!’ This victory is the icing on Lorenzo’s birthday cake, and we’re sure his Mum is very proud.

The reigning champion Marc Marquez made valiant efforts to catch up but wasn’t able to match Lorenzo’s consistent speed and had to settle for second place. Considering his broken finger, which he had been battling with for over a week, this result was nothing to be ashamed of. Marquez certainly hasn’t let his spectacular defeat in Argentina get to him – but we wouldn’t have expected anything less!

Valentino Rossi came in third and had to come to terms with being lower down the podium than his team mate, but he kept a cool head: “It was a difficult weekend…In the end it’s a podium, so it’s not so bad, but also in the race I wasn’t strong enough to fight with Jorge and also with Marc.” Despite admitting that he and his team had some problems over the weekend, Rossi’s definitely not down and out yet. Rossi has now secured his fourth consecutive podium of 2015, and his 200th all-time podium finish, which is a testament to the Doctor’s pure skill and perseverance. We’ll be looking out for another glimmer of that Rossi magic in France on May 17th.

Another rider who has a lot to be proud of is Cal Crutchlow, who finished as the top satellite rider for the third time this season, despite suffering from flu all weekend! Encouraged by his podium finish in Argentina, Crutchlow showed us once again that British riders can make it to the top of the table. The CWM LCR Honda rider came in fourth, with a pragmatic approach that kept him safely in the top five. He said: “Fourth position was the best we could do today with my physical condition. I was happy enough to be honest, we had a good race and I pushed when I needed to push.” Sensible words from Crutchlow, and we hope he recovers fully in time for Le Mans.

We’re finding this year a hard one to call – what will happen in France on May 17th? Who will go the distance and come out on top? We can barely handle the suspense! Let us know who you’re backing for 2015’s MotoGP champion in the comments below.
