Marc Marquez shows his true colours and sails to victory in Austin!
The reigning champion is back! Marc Marquez has put our doubts to rest on the Circuit of the Americas, showing that he is the master of this track with a 100% record. In qualifying, the young Spaniard’s bike gave up but he didn’t; he raced to the pit as if his life depended on it, hopped on his second bike and qualified in pole position. After this display of sheer determination, no-one could touch him in yesterday’s race as he finished 2.354 seconds ahead. Marquez left Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso and the great Valentino Rossi in the dust this time, showing that his troubles in Qatar haven’t slowed him down one bit.
Ducati started the race on a high with Dovizioso leading the field, but Marc Marquez soon showed his true genius and opened up an amazing 5 second lead. He spoke up about his expert strategy: “I decided to keep calm in the early laps to try to understand the situation well, and when I started to find a feeling similar to practice, I decided to push the pace a bit. That was when I was able to open up a gap.” Marquez was cool as a cucumber as he sailed across the line, showing the rest of the paddock that his title won’t be taken without a fight. Rossi and Dovizioso had no choice but to battle for second place, recreating their epic duel in Qatar. The two Italians were cutting the corners so close together that they nearly collided in turn 12, with Rossi taking risks to try and beat the powerful Ducati GP15. In the end, it was a tyre issue for Rossi that led to Dovizioso’s second place steal. We’ll be looking forward to seeing Rossi push himself again in Argentina on April 19th.
The Brits did well again in the second race of the season, with Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Bradley Smith finishing as the top satellite rider in 6th place. Smith showed his hunger to win from the very start, overtaking six riders to speed up to 4th place- an impressive feat after starting in 10th. He was elated with one of the top results of his career, and was rightly proud of himself: “It was a great race and I am pleased with the result.” Cal Crutchlow had a more frustrating race, coming in 7th once again, a whole 17 seconds behind Marc Marquez. He got caught up in Scott Redding and Pol Espargaro’s first-lap crash and lost several seconds, making it hard to catch up again. CWM LCR Honda will be looking to up their game for the next race in Argentina, with no interruptions to crush Cal Crutchlow’s hopes. It’ll certainly be a close one on April 19th, with Rossi just clinging on to the top of the table with only one point on Dovizioso. Whatever happens between the two Italians in Argentina, the roar of Marquez’s Honda will be ringing in every rider’s ears.
